about me page for website_edited.jpg

Hello! Thank you for visiting my page!

My name is Laura and I am a primarily self-taught Scratchboard Artist located in Kinmount, Ontario. I currently specialize in Wildlife and Pet Portraits. my inspirations come from my love of wildlife, nature, and my adventures.

Nature and wildlife have always been true passions of mine. Growing up I was always running around outdoors, exploring, and making friends with any and all the wildlife I could find on my adventures. I was always interested in art and loved drawing animals, plants and other things I would find in nature.

My artistic abilities, however, did not necessarily come naturally when I was young. Art class was always a subject I struggled with and because of this my passion for art quickly faded. In 2019 I began playing around with water colour and started to find my passion for art once again. Later that year I was invited to take part in a local art show where a neighboring artist introduced me to scratchboard. I quickly fell in love with the medium and through learning and practicing scratchboard my love for drawing wildlife grew.

In 2022 I was accepted as an active member with the Society of Scratchboard artists.

What is Scratchboard?

Scratchboard is an art method that focuses on a subtractive process where the artist scratches away the black ink in order to create their piece. For my artwork I use Ampersand Scratchboards.  These are 1/8" wood panels coated with a layer of white clay and then layered with black India ink on top. I use a variety of scalpel blades, tattoo needles, and fiberglass brushes to etch away at the India ink to bring out the crisp white of the clay underneath.
